Generator safety for suburban homes: sizing, placement, and the mistakes that hurt people
Northwest Home Services Directory - October 2026 - 7 min read
A portable generator keeps a winter outage comfortable, but only if it is sized for the right loads and placed where its exhaust cannot reach your family.
When a winter storm drops power across Arlington Heights or Palatine, the generator question stops being theoretical. Done right, a portable generator runs the essentials for days. Done wrong, it is one of the most dangerous appliances a homeowner can own. The difference is sizing, placement, and fuel discipline.
Size for the essentials, not the whole house. A refrigerator, a sump pump, a furnace blower, a few lights, and phone chargers add up to far less than most people expect, which is why a 3,500 to 4,500 watt inverter generator covers most suburban outages. Add up the running watts of what you truly need, then check the starting watts for anything with a motor, like the sump pump. The shop's Winter Storm and Power Outage Playbook includes a sizing worksheet that walks through this in ten minutes.
Placement is the rule that cannot bend. Run the generator outside, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents. Never in a garage, even with the door open: carbon monoxide pools and drifts, and it has no smell to warn you. Modern inverter generators include a CO shutoff sensor, which is a backup, not a permission slip.
Fuel and cords are the quiet failure points. Store gasoline in an approved container, rotate it each season, and let the engine cool fully before refueling. Connect appliances with a heavy outdoor cord rated for the load; a 12-gauge cord is the right default, one cord per load, never chained. If you want the furnace and sump hardwired instead, that is a transfer switch job for a licensed electrician, and it is one of the best upgrades a northwest suburbs home can get before January.
Finally, practice before the storm. Start the generator on a calm Saturday, run it for fifteen minutes under load, and write down your steps on the playbook's first-hour checklist. The middle of an outage, in the dark, in February, is the wrong classroom.
